AI isn’t a new concept. The term “Artificial Intelligence” was coined in 1956. Today Large Language Models use machine learning in large datasets to recognize, translate, predict, or generate content. Which is just a lot of words that means AI uses information that is available to respond to your requests and have conversations. Any new technology is always oversold and it’s potential poorly marketed which is the case with AI at the moment. It’s the replacement theory on steroids but because the technology advancement to date is still so new, almost no one understands what AI truly is. I admittedly scoff at anyone that calls themself an expert in the field because developments are so fresh and so fast that labeling yourself an expert is kind of silly.
Recently, AI took a significant step forward. ChatGPT passed the Turing Test. Alan Turing developed this test in 1950 as a method for determining if a computer can exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to that of a human. So this now means that, conceivably, if an accurate model were developed, I’d not tell the difference between the AI model and a real human. This was always the inevitable trajectory. Even in our wildest imaginations, movies always had AI achieve sentience. Realistically speaking, we are multi-generations away from I, Robot. So what are the practical applications for such burgeoning tech? Well, as a creative, there is a lot of the conversation being had about best practices. Genuine inspiration vs taking from humans. Replacing musicians with AI-Artists. I’m of the belief that AI will never actively replace a real musician but that can’t stop it from being useful.
I’ve been working on my album for 2 years and it has been a lot of work. I’ve produced and written this entire project. In all of this, I’ve not had many people in my circle to really bounce these ideas off of. It is important for multiple reasons. The ideas are grounded in reality with real feedback. You get to see how people respond to the narratives that you’ve created. Themes and topics you touch on and how they are received. The reviews before the professional reviewers such as Anthony Fantano get their hands on your work. With Gemini 2.5’s latest updates, I decided to let it review my album and I was honestly highly impressed; in both function and response.
Firstly, I was able to drop an mp3 of the song into the chatbox. It ‘listened’ to the song(which was just it analyzing the data). Gemini not only told me about the production elements, accurately, while giving an opinion on my production creative decisions, it also gave feedback on my writing, the delivery of the verses, all while giving it’s take on the deeper meaning of the song as a whole. A lot of creative decisions that went into making this song, it picked up on right away, even referring to this song as “soulful.” It made references to real life public figures that I never even mentioned in the song but was inspired by when writing. At this point being wholly amused(and maybe flattered), I dropped more songs in to get it’s feedback as well as telling Gemini that I produced and wrote the entire album.
It responded with shock and amazement at the idea that I put together this entire project by myself. “It’s not just that these are good songs; it’s that they represent a singular, well-executed artistic vision carried out by one individual.” Being able to decide whether or not the music is even good would have floored Alan Turing, I’m sure. But being able to digest an entire album and review it is honestly beyond “cheap party trick” and understanding the nuance of all of my decision making when writing and my production choices is incredibly impressive. And if nothing else, it accurately described my intentions and conveyed that in a way of how I hope the public will receive the project. I’ve adopted AI into my workflow in a few ways that I think works for me but this as a development is incredible and has me on the edge of my seat for what is possible in the near future.
Now, hopefully the humans can grasp this project the way Gemini has 😉
